About Us

Kaleidoscope Publishing specializes in unique Christian products infused with God’s truth.
Our goal is to come alongside select authors whose work, vision, and message align with ours in a way that is mutually beneficial.
Our mission is to share God’s truth through creative media, so others can find the freedom in Christ they need.

Kaleidoscope is not a vanity press—we do not publish every manuscript we receive. Rather, our hybrid-publishing process offers the best aspects of a traditional and a self-publishing journey. Extensive editing produces the highest quality product that will best serve your audience and enhance your ministry, and our ever-expanding wholesale network and distribution relationships help you sell your book. Yet our authors are able to buy their own books at a substantial discount (plus shipping). Print book royalties are paid at a high flat rate rather than a percentage. And when our authors direct readers to the Kaleidoscope website rather than to other retailers, they receive an even higher royalty. The bottom line is a win-win for our authors.

To discuss a customized publishing plan for your book, email us at info@kaleidoscopebooks.net. Please allow up to four weeks for a response, especially during conference season and around major holidays.

What Makes Us Unique

If you’ve investigated publishing options, you’ve found there are many. Even though Kaleidoscope Publishing is a fee-for-service publisher, we don’t work like typical assisted publishing companies.
We are selective. We do not publish every manuscript submitted to us. Projects must align with our mission statement, values, and product lines.
We offer continuous support. Through our online community, through courses and training and coaching, and through our marketing efforts aimed at building the Kaleidoscope Publishing brand, we endeavor to prepare our authors to promote their books and walk alongside them as they do so.
We have a comprehensive editing process. Each book project gets several editing passes from two to three professionals. More eyes on a manuscript means a higher level of consistency, continuity, and quality.
We use a collaborative approach. We work with the author throughout the editing phases, and we don’t go to print until the author signs off the final draft.
We treat each project as a unique piece of work. While we have a somewhat standard production process, we do not have a cookie-cutter approach to content or presentation.
We offer a la carte services for those who want to seek a traditional contract first but want the option to come back to us if they change their minds. We are happy to create a proposal, help refine a manuscript, ghostwrite, etc., for authors who want to try pursuing a traditional contract before committing to publishing with Kaleidoscope. For many of these services, if an author returns to us for publication within one year of completed work, up to 80% of the editing/writing costs may be applied toward a publishing package fee, provided the author seeks to publish the manuscript as it was delivered to them.
We pay higher royalties on print books than traditional publishers. In general, traditional publishers pay royalties at 8% to 20% of net profit (after expenses). If an author received an advance, the author would have to “earn out” their advance before receiving any royalties. At Kaleidoscope, print royalties are paid quarterly as follows: 1) print royalties from sales through Amazon, Ingram, Draft2Digital, or other non-direct sale wholesalers and distributors are 100% of net minus one to two dollars (depending on your contract terms), (2) print royalties through www.kaleidoscopebooks.net online store sales are 100% of net minus two or three dollars (depending on your contract terms). Note: A print book sale through www.kaleidoscopebooks.net earns the author about twice as much net royalty as a sale through Amazon or Ingram. (Example: A $20 print book with 268 pages earns about $7.50 net royalty from a sale through Amazon or Ingram, and about $14.75 net royalty from a sale through our website.)
*For more insight into publishing costs of traditional publishers, see this blog by agent Steve Laube at https://stevelaube.com/who-gets-paid-in-publishing-publishing-economics-101/
We pay 70/30 royalties on eBooks and audiobooks. Audiobook and eBook royalties are based on 70% of net via all channels including those through www.kaleidoscopebooks.net. An eBook sale through our website earns the author a higher net royalty than a sale through Amazon or Ingram. (Example: An eBook costing $18.99 on Amazon pays a net royalty of about $6.65, of which the author receives $4.65. That same eBook sale through our website generates a net royalty of $13.29.)
We don’t price gouge our authors. Author copies are sold at production cost plus $1 to $2 (depending on contract terms) plus shipping. Cost is based on the number of pages, not a price range.
We don’t require minimum orders. There is no minimum purchase requirement of author copies at publication, and authors can subsequently order any quantity of author copies at any time.
We don’t require blanket social media engagement. For our authors who have built a social media following, we encourage them to continue their current strategies until those strategies no longer serve them. For all our authors, our philosophy includes a prayer-based, ministry-focused analysis of the project and potential avenues for reader engagement.
We view marketing as a long-term ministry relationship rather than a sales pitch. Sharing the gospel is what’s most important to us. We believe if you bless, break, and share your message with those who are hungry for it, God will take care of the rest. Our goal is to help each author create a sustainable, actionable plan that fits their calling and their message in a way that promotes joy over anxiety and capitalizes on each author’s unique gifting.
We offer distribution like larger houses, and we LOVE establishing relationships with new wholesalers and distributors. While most fee-for-service publishers put the burden on authors to consign books to independent vendors, Kaleidoscope happily works with vendors through direct sales options. Authors are encouraged to put any potential vendor in contact with Kaleidoscope through info@kaleidoscopebooks.net. There is no minimum order, and the authors do not have to purchase or transport the books.
